Mining industry in Australia offers equal opportunities to both the skilled and unskilled labour from around the globe. Getting a job in the mining industry easier than most people may think. Mining industries in Australia will hire people with little or no experience for several unskilled mining jobs and will train them. Gone are the days when mining in Australia was a high risk business. Leading edge machinery and world class safety measures have reduced the risk in employing the unskilled mining workers.
Hundreds of mines operate in Western Australia. Due to sky rocketing global demand for minerals, the mining industry in Australia has a huge, all time high demand for unskilled labour. There are examples of a lot of professionals with years of experience and skills in a totally unrelated industry change their profession to reap the benefits of a fat paycheck. With the right information you can basically just walk in off the street and they will train you. Great paying unskilled mining jobs, with no experience or licenses can pay 1400-1700 AUD a week.
All the mining hot spots like Olympic dam, Karratha, Port Hedland, Mt Isa and Kalgoorlie are facing massive workforce shortages due to the mining boom. The unskilled labour shortage was so high; the Australian Government ran a pilot program offering $5000 to unemployed people to move to Western Australia to take up unskilled mining jobs. The pilot program was the beacon of Western Australia’s mineral wealth and prosperity.
Individuals with no experience or skills can work as a drillers offsider, sample preparer, surveyor assistant, or a geologists assistant. Alternatively an unskilled individual can choose to opt for cleaning jobs, kitchen jobs or catering jobs. Drillers’ Offsiders help in moving, deploying and operating drilling rigs to drill holes for, exploration for minerals and site investigation. Geological Sample Preparers work involves the sorting, crushing, splitting and milling of the collected geological samples, in addition to other laboratory errands.
A Surveyor Assistant assists the Surveyor in setting up of the survey equipment, helping the surveyor in field and office duties, monitoring the supplies inventory and maintaining the survey equipment. The responsibilities of a Geologists’ Assistant are assisting the Geologist in day to day drilling and contractor management, collection of representative samples and helping the Geologist in safety initiatives.
Some of the other openings that require little or no skills include catering, cleaning, tending the wet-mess bar etc. Job vacancies of this sort require some prior experience and often a car licence is required.
Positions on mine sites can either be residential positions where you live in a mining town and usually picked up by the mining company free bus service to the mine site and back home again after work. Other types are drive in drive out known as DIDO where you drive to a mine site from your full time residence to the mine site and live in a mining camp or caravan while working a set roster and when your roster is finished you drive back home for your rostered time off. FIFO – fly in fly out is very common as this enables you to live in the city and when your roster starts you fly on a free chartered flight to work, live in a mining camp which is fully catered with free food and accommodation, work a set roster and then fly back to the city when your roster has finished. Great way to save money, when everything is paid for.
The starting pay cheques for a Drillers’ Offsider can range from $50,000 – $70,000, a Sample Preparer can earn between $45,000 – $55,000, a Surveyor Assistant can make $45,000 – $60,000, a Geologists’ Assistant can earn $45,000 – $70,000 while a cleaning job, kitchen job or a catering job can make anywhere between $55,000 – $70,000. All that is required out of an individual seeking a unskilled mining job is honesty and commitment and the willingness to long hours away from the comforts of home. In return a high reward rate if offered, free flights if needed, free food and accommodation. Also promotion is offered as the majority of unskilled mining jobs offer onsite training like an apprenticeship, once you prove yourself and gain experience, career advancement is offered which is eagerly encouraged by the mining company or subcontracting company. This means more responsibility but also even more money, its normal to receive a pay increase after only three months of employment.
